While a room mate was in the Black Dragon raid today, they experienced a mass raid disconnect causing about 95% of the raid to close their clients. Surely explainable by server load. But why would I, in a different online game, get disconnected from that game at the same time as the nearly the entire raid in AA? This has bizarrely occurred during multiple situations-curiously always involving pvp with the pirates. What would cause such disconnects?

As you confirmed yourself, you were also disconnected from another online game at the same time. That can happen if you have a connection issue. As, according to your words, it was a mass disconnect, that means issue was not on your provider side but on the internet backbone.
