the reason for so much lag in game and the shut down was likely the hhuge storms running through the U.S. today i imagine it would interfere a lot with the server download and upload not to mention alot of the east coast was losing power on and off all day.

I see, I wonder if they are having really bad storms like the US today.

Cause it was really strange how the server went down. Instead of just instantly going down (like in a power cut) it was a very slow process, as feature after feature slowly started to fail.

is the server being attacked by ddos or someone using hacks/bugs to crash the server?

Server is online. Server crash reason was detected. Crash was caused by Database lock while auction bidding. We are working on the fix. We’ll have a Technical restart within next 24 hours. We’ll inform players beforehand regarding the Technical restart time.
